MYTHS & MARKS: Archetypes throughout the Ages.
Saturday, July 31 through October 9, 2010.
Opening Reception: July 31, 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

The Printmaking Council is proud of the involvement of artist Sally Spofford as the juror for this exhibition. A long immersion in the art of the Maya was Sally's gateway into the iconography of other and older civilizations. During the search for archetypes her head became jammed with fragments and details. Eventually insights began to lead to assimilation and fusion. Sally feels that our culture seems cut off from its past without myths or heroes. Her fascination with history and other cultures has taken her on a search for beginnings, essences, and links to contemporary culture. MYTHS & MARKS features works that respond to these ideas and universal questions such as, who are we and how did we get here? Sally Spofford graduated with high honors from Swarthmore College and also studied at the Art Students League with Bernard Klonis and George Grosz and at the China Institute with Ya-Chun Wang. Her paintings and sculpture are in the collections of the New Jersey State Museum, Newark Museum, Morris Museum and Hunterdon Art Museum, as well as many corporate and private collections.

JUROR'S STATEMENT: French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery said water is "...not necessary to life, but rather life itself." Water literally defines our existence. About 70 percent of the earth's surface is water. And the water that sustains all life today is the same water that has submerged continents, moved mountains, carved out canyons and rolled across the sky in massive weather systems since the earth began.

In many ways, water is a living being, always in motion, always changing and always vulnerable to unethical human conduct. The rest of the biological community embraces a natural ethic that allows plants and animals to coexist without harm in our water-dependent universe. Meanwhile, humankind continues to exploit land and water resources to satisfy economic desires, enjoying the privileges while not recognizing the obligations inherent to our interdependence as a natural community.

Water is life, and we have a moral obligation to protect it for all earth's inhabitants, now and in the future. Biological communities have figured out an ethical way to live together over eons, each taking their place in the natural world. We need to learn to do the same.

Summer 2010 Classes

Wednesday, July 7, 10am-4pm
Creating Thermofax Silk Screens with Judy Langille
Fees: M $120, NM $135. Materials: $20
There are many ways to create a dynamic silkscreen image. In this class students will create screens using black and white photocopies and a Thermo-Fax machine. The method results in intricately detailed images as well as highly graphic designs that are transferred to the screen in a matter of seconds. High contrast photographs can also be used as inspiration. The class will begin with designing and preparing the images. We will then experiment with printing these new screens. Paint or silkscreen ink will be used to screen on fabric, paper, ceramics, wood or clothing.

Thursday, July 8, 10am-4pm
Editioning In A New Way with Judy Langille
Fees: M $120, NM $135. Materials: $20
In this class students will create silkscreens using black and white photocopies and the Thermo-Fax machine as the process for printing books in limited editions. This method allows for intricately detailed images as well as highly graphic designs to be transferred to the screen in a matter of seconds. Screens will be designed with the goal of creating multiples for a small edition. Paint and silkscreen ink will be available for experimentation. The multiples can be used as paper, book covers, sections of quilts, images on cloth for handmade clothing, and original prints. Level: All.

Friday, July 9, 10am-4pm
Torn Paper and Textures with Judy Langille
Fees: M $120, NM $135. Materials: $15
Multiple simple printmaking processes will be explored in this class.
Textures, text and photos are some of the design inspirations for
student's work. Paper resist techniques will be used in combination with
stencils from torn/cut paper, and Thermo Fax screens to create unique
designs on paper or cloth. Students will also experiment with removing
colors and overlapping layers creating complexity in their work. The results
will be spontaneous and exciting.

This intensive workshop is part of PCNJ's plan to offer artists safer, cleaner alternatives in printmaking. ElectroEtch is the only non-toxic method of platemaking that allows printmakers to work and rework zinc and copper plates regardless of size, using all traditional etching techniques established over the last 500 years, as well as some fascinating new ones. Not only is the use of acid avoided, but there is no hydrogen generation when zinc is etched. This ElectroEtch workshop will demonstrate the use of very low voltage electricity in place of acid to etch metal intaglio plates. The disposal of ecologically harmful solutions is avoided. Traditional and non-traditional methods of image creation will be explored including line etch, soft ground and embossment. The workshop includes three days of training with the Behrs, pioneers of the Electroetch technology, and two additional days in the studio to experiment with the techniques. The workshop is specially designed for those experienced in intaglio and is mandatory for any artist wishing to teach ElectroEtch for PCNJ in the future. Class size is limited to 6, so please register early.

Artist-to-Artist Network begins in February

Dear PCNJ Members,

Let's get together on February 18th at 7 PM to discuss the beginning of an Artist To Artist Network!

Here is a little background that may help to explain...
I have been a long time PCNJ member, sometimes active/ sometimes not. I have recently retired and am thrilled to be spending much more consistent time in my studio. All of this working in solitude has me craving interaction with other artists. I look for the opportunity to meet with like-minded artists who are willing to share. I have heard others expressing a similar desire.

There are no pre-conceived plans, other than that some members have expressed a similar interest in organizing "something". So, let's start and see what develops!! Bring some ideas yourself or come and listen and weigh in on ideas expressed. This comes from a desire to develop a place to come together with other artists in an open and encouraging environment. Who knows where this might take us?

Refreshments are welcomed. Hope to see you at PCNJ on the 18th.

Artist in Residence

2010 Artist in Residence Program

Program Description
The Printmaking Council of New Jersey (PCNJ) is a non-profit fine art center specializing in print and paper media. For the past 36 years, it has provided activities, exhibitions, events, and classes that support and nurture an appreciation for printmaking, photography, papermaking, and artist books. PCNJ offers an annual 6 week residency to professional artists who are interested in developing new and innovative work in printmaking and its related disciplines. PCNJ welcomes applications with diverse perspectives, personal narrative and style. PCNJ does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or socioeconomic background.

PCNJ's Artist-in-Residence (AiR) is supported by a grant from the Adolf Konrad Foundation. The Foundation, created in memory of the renowned artist, provides an opportunity to one artist each year to utilize the Council's Printmaking Studios. Adolf Konrad understood the many benefits a studio can provide for an artist who needs intense concentration to conceptualize, explore and create a new body of work. PCNJ is committed to helping arrange for the special needs of the artist, publicity for both the artist and the program, and to providing exposure for the artist's work.

Benefits for the Artist-in-Residence (AiR)

*Use of a professional studio and related equipment.
*A $1,000 stipend to support the residency and offset the cost of supplies.
*Uninterrupted time to explore new ideas and techniques.
*Interaction with a new community of artists.
*Publicity in local and regional media.
*An opportunity to exhibit work at the end of the residency period.

Residency Requirements

In 2010, PCNJ seeks applicants working in printmaking and its related disciplines, preferably in a non-toxic format.

The AiR MUST BE self-sufficient in a printmaking studio.

The AiR shall use the studio in a manner that demonstrates a strong commitment to the program.

He/she will spend at least 20 hours a week at PCNJ, which can include days, night, and weekends.

The residency will take place during a 6 week period from May 1 - June 20, 2010.

The AiR must provide his/her own housing and transportation to and from the studio.

The goal of the AiR should be to complete a new body of work. This could include print editions, artist books, papermaking, and installations, among others.

The new work will be exhibited in PCNJ's Library Gallery from Oct. 16 - Dec. 25.

The AiR is also responsible for offering a limited number of events at PCNJ, such as lectures, demonstrations, workshops and publicity functions.

The AiR will donate a small portion of the work completed during the residency to PCNJ.

Application Criteria
Prospective AiRs must forward a packet to PCNJ that includes:

Application Form

A professional C.V., resume, or bio.

One letter of reference from a professional source, such as a department Chair, academic colleague, former professor, curator, arts administrator, etc.

8-10 examples of work on CD. Each image must include the artist's name, date, medium, and size. PCNJ is looking for a strong body of work, which does not need to be limited to just printmaking.

A one-page Artist Statement.

Other Considerations
Matriculating students are not eligible to apply. Application materials will not be returned without including a stamped, self-addressed envelope. There is no entry fee.

Calendar:
Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2010.

Selected artist and one alternate will be notified by April 1, 2010.

Residency period will take place from May 1 through June 20, 2010.

Final exhibition will take place from October 16 - December 25, 2010.

During her residency she is creating layered calendars that fuse her past and her present together into one cohesive body of work. Elaine received her BA in Studio Art from Bloomsburg University, and her MFA in Mixed Media from Montclair State University. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Art at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ.
