PhotoEtching I with Sheila Goloborotko
Tuesday, March 6 AND Thursday, March 8, 10am-4pm
M: $250, NM: $265. Materials Fee: $50
This photo etching method uses Solarplate, a revolutionary and versatile method of printmaking. Artists create a photo etching plate from ink drawings on acetate or a laser print on a transparency. The Solarplate is a light sensitized polymer steel plate. An image is exposed and developed with water. This is a non-toxic, non-acid method that can produce extraordinary images. The class will include time for beginners as well as more advanced printmakers to experiment with various ways to create images on the plate and print them.

PhotoEtching II with Sheila Goloborotko
This class is an opportunity to explore ways of printing your photo etching plates. This workshop will explore the use of color inks, multi drop plates, multi layered prints, viscosity of colors and more. Their will be plenty of time for intermediate, as well as more advanced printmakers to experiment with alternative ways to create while printing. Plates can be combined, layered or placed simultaneously on one paper. Artists will be able to make multiple impressions during this class. Photo etching I is required.

The Path of All Possibilities: from Plate to Print with Shelley Thorstensen
Thursday, April 12, 10am-4pm
M: $135, NM: $150. Materials Fee: $15
How you print your plate matters! Learn how to include chine collé, relief - surface rolls, as a motif, as a separate element, multiple plate printing, à la poupée, registration techniques, viscosity (monoprint and editioned) stencils, frottage, and get an introduction to mixed print media. Shelley will demonstrate how the same plate can be printed in all iterations with different results. This is an all day demonstration. There will be ample hand-outs and time to ask questions and take notes.

LITHOGRAPHY

Polyester Plate Lithography with Greta Anderson
M: $120, NM: $135. Materials Fee: $20
In this workshop we will work with the new Z*Acryl D2P plates, litho inks and water in the printing process. High contrast black and white images can be copied or printed directly from a laser copier or computer to the plate and are ready for printing in a few minutes. We will explore a variety of washes including toner washes which lend themselves to subtle gradations of color. In addition, students can use sharpies, crayons, ballpoint pens and archival stamps to enrich their designs or create new ones. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite art work for ideas to layer into multicolored prints. Color may also be added with chine collé.

Paper Lithography with Patricia Cudd
Thursday, April 5 OR Friday, May 11, 10am-4pm
M: $100, NM: $115. Materials Fee: $15
Want to print small editions easily with little fuss? Toner based photocopies will be prepared as paper plates for printing with gum Arabic and without other chemicals used in traditional lithography. This process works well with mixed media works. It is best to use images that do not have large solid areas or very subtle value changes (all typical printmaking concerns). We will be using oil-based inks so images can be printed over most other media. Have fun manipulating images and bring several copies and variations to explore the process.

Introduction to Color Viscosity Monoprinting with Kathy Caraccio
Two Wednesdays, March 14 and 21, 10:30-4:30pm
M: $280, NM: $295. Materials Fee: $25
Come experiment with the magic of the painterly print! In this workshop, students will create one-of-a-kind monotypes through the process that inventor Krishna Reddy named "simultaneous color printing". The color viscosity process enables the artist to construct an image on the surface of a plate with inks whose opposing consistencies cause them to appear to resist one another while applied simultaneously. As images are developed, second passes through the press reveal more innovative ways of manipulating the materials, like using static charge to your advantage as an unpredictable drawing tool, and drawing with solvents to create variations in line and shape. Fast, spontaneous, improvisational, colorful, and fun, color viscosity lends itself to the immediate creative gratification that artists crave in the crafting of a body of work!

The Painterly Print Monotype with Bruce Waldman
Saturday, March 17, 11am-5pm
M: $120, NM: $135. Materials: $30
This workshop is ideal for artists who love to draw and paint directly and spontaneously. Monoprint and Monotype incorporate draftsmanship and direct painting with printmaking. This workshop approaches monoprinting in a unique way; draw and paint in color with rollers, brushes, palette knives, and explore how to use found materials creating textures that enhance the atmosphere and mood of the print. We will focus on pulling both light out of a dark background, as well as working dark on light. Students who love to draw find freedom using these techniques, their color sense is expanded and their drawing abilities can evolve to a higher level. All levels of experience welcome.

M: $275, NM: $290. Materials Fee: $10
This two day intensive workshop introduces students to altering pages of found books through collage that begins with a sequence of inter-connecting concepts. Using the language of computers, 'cutting' and 'pasting' informs students to assess and integrate a range of disparate imagery. Through the practice of dis/connecting two or more pages through the use of zippers, Velcro and machine stitching, for example, constructing relationships through layering images is another focus of the class. Students are motivated to use their intuitive processes, combining meaning and grasping the formal issues of shape, layers, imagery, text, line, movement, pacing and transitions. Developing a sensitivity for integrating their art making intentions through abstract and narrative concepts are challenged. Accomplishing this task during class students work on individual pages using a variety of mediums; print materials derived from the computer; offset printing; found book pages; magazines; or their own picture-making sources. The class will also profile current artists working with both altered books and pages.

Testimonial: "Combat Paper creates a community of veterans working together sharing knowledge and the simple, repetitive physical act of making paper. When the community sees, hears, meets, and looks at the art made from physical remnants of war, by the warrior, they then begin to have a connection to what war does to people. I believe this is an important aspect to help connect fellow veterans, connect community members to veterans, and connect veterans to communities they live in."
Workshop participant and former army medic Jesse Albrecht

The Combat Paper Program is dedicated to open, honest and respectful forms of expression shared through paper making, art making, and writing.

Combat Paper is a public environment where all participants are mindful of each other's safety.

Combat Paper is an open and free workshop available every Sunday. All veterans are welcome. No exclusions

Combat Paper follows all studio policies and safety rules of Printmaking Center of NJ.

This Combat Paper Program has been inspired by and adapted from the highly successful Combat Paper Project which was co-founded and co-directed by Drew Cameron and Drew Matott. The Drews and their crew have toured the United States and several foreign countries bringing healing art programs to veterans in communities for the past 3 years. Program Coordinators:

David Keefe was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and grew up in Newark, Delaware. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Montclair State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Delaware. From 2002-2009, he served in the United States Marine Corps and completed a tour of combat duty in Iraq from 2006-2007. Besides facilitating the Combat Paper Program, Dave teaches Painting and Graduate Independent Study at Montclair State University, works as a part-time curator and exhibition coordinator, and makes art in his New Jersey studio.

Eli Wright began working with the Combat Paper Project (CPP) shortly after its creation in 2007, while he was serving as a medic in the US Army. Learning the craft of traditional handmade paper making from co-founders Drew Cameron and Drew Matott, he immediately recognized the therapeutic potential of this art form for veterans and other survivors of trauma. After his discharge from the Army, he joined CPP on one of its many workshop tours, reaching out to veterans and discovering creative paths to healing through communication and collaboration. Eli is honored to have this opportunity to help bring the Combat Paper Project to a new home and community of veterans in New Jersey.

Curator's Statement on The Continuous Thread

We think of storytelling in the form of the written or spoken word, but from the beginning of the human race stories have been told in the form of drawing, painting and sculpture. Homage to the hunt in the caves of Lascaux, images engraved on the walls of the Pharaoh's Tombs and Newspaper Rock in Eastern Utah, all tell us narratives.

Artists have continued to tell stories through paintings and sculpture commissioned by the church and the nobility. In the last two to three hundred years artists have selected their own subject matter and created political, historical and social comment. The four artists I have chosen approach storytelling in different ways.

Marion Behr keeps a daily dairy, drawing with pen on paper just letting the thoughts flow, mulling over the events of the day. These form the inspiration for a series of prints. Robroy Chalmers repurposes dark dense prints and drawings referencing his recent move across the USA, making them fly and lightly swirl around the room. Marcia Widenor's knitted paper clothing charges the viewer to wonder about the stories that inspired the fabrication of these beautiful objects. Aileen Bassis asks viewers to draw places from the past on acetate, 'Memory Maps'. Thinking about the nature of memory and how this has fascinated people throughout time she decided to use quotes from different philosophers, along with the photographs taken at the time, to document their experience of memory.

Artist Sally Spofford, the juror for this exhibition, feels that our culture seems cut off from its past without myths or heroes. Her fascination with history and other cultures has taken her on a search for beginnings, essences, and links to contemporary culture. MYTHS & MARKS features works that respond to these ideas and universal questions such as, who are we and how did we get here?

Artist in Residence

2012 Artist in Residence Program

Our 2011 Artist in Residence was Carlos Frias

Program Description
The Printmaking Council of New Jersey (PCNJ) is a non-profit fine art center specializing in print and paper media. For the past 36 years, it has provided activities, exhibitions, events, and classes that support and nurture an appreciation for printmaking, photography, papermaking, and artist books. PCNJ offers an annual 6 week residency to professional artists who are interested in developing new and innovative work in printmaking and its related disciplines. PCNJ welcomes applicants with diverse perspectives, personal narrative and style. PCNJ does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or socioeconomic background. Applications must be post marked by March 1, 2012.

PCNJ's Artist-in-Residence (AiR) is supported by a grant from the Adolf Konrad Foundation. The Foundation, created in memory of the renowned artist, provides an opportunity to one artist each year to utilize the Council's Printmaking Studios. Adolf Konrad understood the many benefits a studio can provide for an artist who needs intense concentration to conceptualize, explore and create a new body of work. PCNJ is committed to helping arrange for the special needs of the artist, publicity for both the artist and the program, and to providing exposure for the artist's work.

Benefits for the Artist-in-Residence (AiR)

*Use of a professional studio and related equipment.
*A $1,000 stipend to support the residency and offset the cost of supplies.
*Uninterrupted time to explore new ideas and techniques.
*Interaction with a new community of artists.
*Publicity in local and regional media.
*An opportunity to exhibit work at the end of the residency period.

Residency Requirements

In 2012, PCNJ seeks applicants working in printmaking and its related disciplines, preferably in a non-toxic format.

The AiR MUST BE self-sufficient in a printmaking studio.

The AiR shall use the studio in a manner that demonstrates a strong commitment to the program.

He/she will spend at least 20 hours a week at PCNJ, which can include days, night, and weekends.

The residency will take place during a 6 week period from May 1 - June 20, 2012.

The AiR must provide his/her own housing and transportation to and from the studio.

The goal of the AiR should be to complete a new body of work. This could include print editions, artist books, papermaking, and installations, among others.

The new work will be exhibited in PCNJ's Library Gallery

The AiR is also responsible for offering a limited number of events at PCNJ, such as lectures, demonstrations, workshops and publicity functions.

The AiR will donate a small portion of the work completed during the residency to PCNJ.

Application Criteria
Prospective AiRs must forward a packet to PCNJ that includes:

Application Form

A professional C.V., resume, or bio.

One letter of reference from a professional source, such as a department Chair, academic colleague, former professor, curator, arts administrator, etc.

8-10 examples of work on CD. Each image must include the artist's name, date, medium, and size. PCNJ is looking for a strong body of work, which does not need to be limited to just printmaking.

A one-page Artist Statement.

Matriculating students are not eligible to apply. Application materials will not be returned without including a stamped, self-addressed envelope. There is no entry fee.
Please Join Us!!!!

Here is a little background that may help to explain the A2A group. The Artist 2 Artist Network came from a desire to develop a place to come together with other artists in an open and encouraging environment. We have been meeting since February 2010 and newcomers are always welcome. We meet once a month (usually on the second Thursday of the month). In addition to our meetings we have, sponsored participation in the Somerville Jazz Festival with art displayed and recently sponsored the screening of "Proceed and Be Bold".

Watch for more information regarding these meetings.

Artist-in-Residence, Carlos Frias

The Printmaking Center was delighted to accept Carlos Frias, an extraordinarily talented painter and mixed media artist, as our 2011 Artist-in-Residence. Carlos began his residency in June. To create work on paper that further explored the theme of genesis was Carlos' primary goal for the residency. He began by creating collagraph plates and using both intaglio and relief printing techniques to create highly successful, multi-dimensional work.

Prints from Carlos' residency will be on display in PCNJ's library gallery from January 7 to March 31, 2012.

The series "Memory" is a tribute to her mother's fifteen year battle with Alhemizer's disease which destroyed her body and mind. Catherine LeCleire received her B.F.A. in printmaking, and her M.A.E. in art education with a concentration in printmaking from Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went on to receive her M.F.A. in fine arts from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles with a concentration in printmaking. She currently teaches printmaking and book art techniques at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, and Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey.

He developed the idea of combining the two into a totally new art form. Clayprinting. While an undergraduate student in 1965, his major was graphics (printmaking), he also developed an interest in clay. In 1971 while a graduate student at Tyler School of Art, Mitch realized the potential of this unique medium. For the past forty years, he has had a wonderful opportunity to develop a printing process that uses clay, not ink, a wooden rolling pin, no printing press, and no paper to make his clay monoprints/clay monotypes.

Kathleen Lang Metaxas initiated her formal training as an artist after raising a family and a long career in real estate and mortgage financing. Her formal art training drew her to printmaking, papermaking and book arts - all hand-on processes that produce results not possible through other media. She has received awards at juried exhibitions. Kathy recently taught book arts at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ.

ENTRY DEADLINE: August 20, 2011.

EXHIBITION DATES: OCTOBER 29 - DECEMBER 24, 2011

JUROR BIO: Artist Lin Carte of Philadelphia maintains an intaglio studio in Fishtown and a drawing/painting studio in Northern Liberties. She served as the master printer at ateliers in Colorado and Florida, and provided classes and workspace for printmakers. Her work is in the permanent collections of several museums in the US and abroad.

DESCRIPTION: Still-points are very fleeting and difficult to come by in this day of high-tech, instant communications, world-wide crises, infringing fears, revolution, and wars. What is a sensitive, caring human being (make that Fine-Artist, Printmaker) to do? Where do we place our trust, focus, energy and meaningful hard work?

Pause and ponder this: The nebula of the reflected world has no boundaries, yet it still transforms space. We are anchored by luminosity, mystery, and process in our world of "impressions." Lucky, lucky us.

How does this still-point manifest visual integrity and honor our legacy of printmaking/lifemaking?

I'm looking for the following in the work:

Celebrating the individual growth process/development

Craftspersonship

Human touch that exponentially manifests the universal

Reverence for meaning through printmaking
