LEGACY (entries finished April 7, 2012)
37th Annual PCNJ Member Exhibition
Legacy: Color Viscosity Study and Final Print, “Looking for Something” (left) and “Finding Something”(right) by Sheila Goloborotko. I first learned Color Viscosity from its creator Krishna Reddy. In order to master it, and make it part of my work, I developed a series of twenty six color viscosity prints. That is a Legacy.
Legacy, a curatorial proposal
Why did explorers cross “Land and Seas”? Were they simply curious, persistent or courageous people looking for treasures? Was it their drive to discover the unknown—to “find something else”? And, after “something else” was found, did they leave behind a Legacy—an unanticipated mark that would remain in the wake of their discovery?
Some explorers never found what they were looking for. Nevertheless they left behind another kind of Legacy—one that reveals and traces the trajectory of their quest.
This curatorial proposal searches to find what we— as artists—will leave behind as ourLegacy.
For this exhibition, we are looking for the explorers who in their practice examine, investigate, seek and sometimes find in contemporary Printmaking “something else”. At the same time, this proposal also searches for the explorers that recorded their search —the search that becomes the material of theirLegacy.
Between “looking for” and finding “something else” —there is always space for chance. In printmaking, unpredictability is intrinsic. To recreate that chance is to develop knowledge. This knowledge, this “how did I get here —how can I get here again” is the Legacy.
What is your Legacy? What is your “mark-making”, “image-making”, “art-making”—that was initiated by your own curiosity, persistence and courage—and resulted in some form of printed matter that is yours, your own unique voice, and your own Legacy?
