Artists will experiment with traditional intaglio and etching techniques to create imagery on copper plates. Techniques such as dry point, aquatint, sugar lift, spit bit, hard and soft ground will be explored as one plate is transformed with the accumulation of techniques. Artists will print state proofs and color proofs as plate develops. No previous experience necessary.

M: $120, NM: $135. Materials Fee: $40
Students will learn the most fundamental intaglio techniques to complete a set of prints from copper plates. We will skip the usual labor-intensive techniques associated with this art form and instead focus on the expressive, versatile, and direct ones: drypoint and hard ground etching. The instructor will emphasize proofing, revising, and reworking the plate in order to achieve naturalistic detail, a balance of tones and textures, and expressive mark-making. Students will learn to use different inking techniques to achieve diverse colors and textures in prints made from the same plate. Later tips will be given on how to hand color those etchings.

This class will focus on learning how to utilize Xerox copy transfers on copper plates for intaglio printmaking. Students will use original images to create a collaged 9 x 12 rendering that will be Xeroxed and then transferred to a plate. The plates will then be etched and printed. By composing the original images from drawings, photographs or text the quality of the printed image will be different than other intaglio techniques, giving the prints a beautiful, unique look. Students will be able to experiment and complete a small variable edition. Students should have a basic knowledge of intaglio printmaking.
